Volkswagen Jetta SE Design/Fit and Finish

The Jetta's cabin is a strong selling point, with high-grade, soft-touch materials and metallic trim. The finely stitched leatherette upholstery (German for high-grade vinyl) does a fine impression of real cowhide with the bonus of being easier to clean. We're also fans of the cool blue lighting used for the instruments and radio display, but are puzzled at VW's decision to use orange lighting for the multifunction display between the speedo and tach.

Mazda MAZDA6

As noted, though, that's likely more than enough for the average American car shopper. The 2009 Mazda Mazda6 s offers plenty of power and plenty of space, and its reasonably capable handling is just icing on the proverbial cake. Fuel economy and interior quality are a step or two behind class leaders, but otherwise, this Mazda is a strong contender. Japan's performance brand has learned its lesson: In this country, bigger — not sportier — is usually better.

Blog Metro Elite Mortgage : Test Drive: 2008 BMW 328i

The Ultimate Entry-Level Sport Sedan

By: Josh Sadlier , Associate Editor
Vehicle Tested: 2008 BMW 3 Series 328i 4dr Sedan (3.0L 6cyl 6M)
Pros: Sublime synthesis of performance and comfort, frugal fuel consumption at highway speeds, superb base stereo, rich interior materials.
Cons: Cramped rear seat, excessive wind noise, less-than-intuitive stereo and climate controls, polarized sunglasses wash out stereo display.

It's hard to make a name for yourself when your big brother's always the center of attention. Just ask the 2008 BMW 328i sedan, which seems doomed to toil in relative obscurity while its steroidal 335i sibling gets all the press. That's a shame, because the 328i is an unequivocal pleasure to drive. It's also roughly $6,000 cheaper than a comparably equipped 335i.

Rather than dismissing the 328i as BMW's entry-level sport sedan, it's best to think of it as a 335i with less motor. These Bavarian brothers are essentially the same everywhere except under the hood. Is the 328i good enough to make you forget about the 335i's extra 70 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque? Not a chance. But it's still a world-class sport sedan in its own right, and its buttery-smooth 230-hp inline six-cylinder engine provides enough power for all but the most demanding drivers.

Toyota Corolla XLE Performance

Our test car belonged to the XLE trim level, meaning it came with the smaller of the two four-cylinder engines offered on the 2009 Corolla — only the "sporty" XRS comes with the 2.4-liter engine. This 1.8-liter mill is rated at 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. Saddled to a four-speed automatic transmission (the only one available on the XLE), the Corolla accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds. This is consistent for base engines in this class and like many economy cars, the Corolla struggled most on the highway where full-throttle on-ramp runs and mid-road hills caused lots of gear-hunting and unpleasant engine screaming. Having cruise control would help on those mid-road hills, but alas, our test car did not have it — an omission that did not go unnoticed among our "civilian" testers.
